What to look for in a volleyball

Panel Construction
Panel design affects how the ball behaves in play. A 12-panel design holds its shape nicely and responds predictably through the match. An 18-panel design gives advanced players better feel for exact control. For most people just getting into it, 12-panel is brilliant whether you're having fun or playing seriously.
Material

The material affects grip and how durable your ball is. Synthetic leather is reliable, easy to clean and what most players use. Genuine leather grips better during serious matches but weighs more and needs care. Rubber is brilliant for outdoor play because it handles weather and rough surfaces well. Think about where you'll be playing most and pick what matches your needs.
Grip

Look for surface texture that feels secure during passing and setting. The outer surface needs to grip your fingers during passing and setting. The valve area needs to be smooth and not interfere with your game. New volleyballs need a few sessions before the surface beds in. Wipe down with a damp cloth before first use to help it settle.

Weight
Weight shapes how the ball responds to your contact. Official weight standards ensure predictable bounce and setting behaviour. Lighter balls respond differently to spin and speed, which can affect consistency during play. Serious players train with regulation weight so their arm develops the right feel and strength for actual competitive play.

Who is this for?
First-time buyers. A beginner volleyball is the most accessible option if you're just starting out. It covers recreational play and casual games without unnecessary features, and it's easy to clean and store.
Regular home and club players. A recreational volleyball is designed for frequent use. The durable construction withstands regular play and holds up to consistent use and cleaning.
Competitive and tournament players. A competition volleyball is built for serious play. Its surface maintains grip and consistency under the demanding conditions where recreational volleyballs tend to wear.
How to maintain your volleyball
After indoor or outdoor play, wipe down with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt that accumulates quickly. Let it air dry completely in the shade before storing, as moisture trapped inside causes the bladder to deteriorate. Check the valve regularly for leaks by inflating and listening for hissing sounds. Keep it away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, which hardens the leather and reduces bounce. Store properly inflated, as under-inflation causes the bladder to age prematurely inside. All volleyballs come with a 2-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions
What volleyball should beginners choose?
A recreational volleyball does the job perfectly. Tough enough for learning and casual play, nothing fancy that gets in the way. Move to competition volleyballs once you're serious about match play.
Does ball weight affect different playing levels?
Recreational volleyballs work for everyone learning the basics. Standard weight is needed for competitive play to build proper technique and arm strength for matches.
Are indoor and outdoor volleyballs different?
How long does a volleyball last?
What is the best volleyball for beach conditions?
Yes. Outdoor volleyballs are built to handle sun, sand and rougher surfaces, while indoor volleyballs focus more on grip, softness and control during match play. Using the right volleyball for your environment helps maintain durability and consistent performance.
A volleyball lasts several seasons with proper care and storage. Surface peeling and grip loss are early warning signs. Outdoor volleyballs degrade faster from sun exposure, so keep them out of direct sunlight when not in use.
Synthetic leather is most effective for beach conditions. It resists moisture and sand far better than other materials, so it handles coastal play without deteriorating quickly. You'll get consistent play through serious beach sessions.
