Surf Hats That Stay Put in the Surf

Sun in the water is worse than sun on the sand, because it comes off the surface as well as out of the sky. Our surf hats are UPF50+, blocking at least 98 per cent of UVB and 95 per cent of UVA, wet or dry. A neoprene chin strap holds them on through duck-dives, and the back mesh drains water so you're not sitting under a wet weight. Olaian designs and tests them at Hendaye, on the water's edge.

Sun Protection

Spending long hours in the water means reliable sun protection is essential. Look for a surf hat with a wide brim that helps shade your face, ears and neck, along with fabrics that offer built-in UV protection. The right coverage helps reduce sun exposure while allowing you to stay comfortable throughout your surf session or other water activities.

Fit and Security

A surf hat should stay securely in place, even when you're paddling, swimming or moving through waves. Adjustable chin straps and head adjustments help create a secure fit without feeling too tight or restrictive. Choosing the right size also improves comfort and reduces the need to readjust your hat during the day.

Material

The material affects how your surf hat performs in and out of the water. Lightweight, quick-drying fabrics stay more comfortable after getting wet, while durable materials are better equipped to handle regular exposure to saltwater and sunshine. Choosing the right material helps your hat remain comfortable and reliable over many beach sessions.

Ventilation

Good airflow makes a noticeable difference on warm days. Mesh panels and breathable fabrics allow heat and moisture to escape while helping water drain more quickly after a swim. Better ventilation keeps your surf hat feeling cooler and more comfortable, both in the water and on the shore.

Who is this for?

Basic sun protection seekers. You want a simple hat for occasional beach days. Easy to wash, straightforward protection from sun and heat.
Regular sun-seekers. You're at the beach often and need reliable protection. Your hat needs to survive repeated saltwater rinsing and maintain its coverage year round.
Active water enthusiasts. You're moving, playing or doing water sports. Your hat needs adjustable straps that keep it secure in wind and during active beach sessions.

Protecting your surf hat

Salt accumulates in fabric and weakens it, so rinse with fresh water after every session. Dry flat on a stand rather than compressed in storage because crumpled damp fabric develops permanent creases and mildew. UV fades colours and makes cotton or blend fabrics brittle, so keep it away from intense sun. For stubborn salt stains, soak in cool water with mild detergent and air dry flat. Store with the hat holding its shape, never flattened or folded.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a surf hat and a regular beach hat?

Surf hats have secure chin straps and quick-dry materials designed for water activities. Regular beach hats prioritise coverage and relaxation. Surf hats stay secure during water entry and active movement.

Can I wear a surf hat while actually surfing or paddling?

Yes, if it has a properly fitted chin strap that won't slip when submerged. Quality surf hats are designed specifically for water sports. The strap keeps it secure during paddle-outs, wipe-outs and repeated water entry.

Which materials dry fastest after water exposure?

Do surf hats work for casual beach days or mainly for water sports?

What head size do most surf hats fit?

Quick-dry synthetic materials like nylon and polyester drain fastest and stay comfortable when wet. Avoid heavier natural fabrics that absorb water and take longer to dry. Quick-dry hats are ideal for frequent water entry throughout your beach session.
Surf hats work for both. The secure chin strap is useful for active pursuits but doesn't interfere with casual beach relaxation. They're versatile enough for swimming, playing, lounging or just walking along the shore. One hat covers multiple beach activities.
Most surf hats come in one size that adjusts via chin strap or internal sizing band. Check product specs for fit range. Quality hats have adjustable mechanisms that accommodate different head sizes comfortably and securely.

Sun Protection For Active Water Days

Sun protection matters most when you're active in the water, where UV comes off the surface as well as out of the sky. A hat that stays put through a duck-dive and drains quickly afterwards makes a genuine difference to both comfort and safety. Check the UPF rating, the strap and the fabric before you choose.
