Rash Guards for Sun and Scrape Protection

A rash guard does two jobs at once: it keeps UV off your skin and stops a board rubbing it raw. We cut ours close so they don't billow or ride up in the water, in fabric that handles salt and chlorine without going baggy. If you're getting cold rather than burnt, the fleece-lined version swaps sun protection for warmth on winter sessions.

What to look for in a rash guard

White and floral printed long sleeve UV protection top for women

Fit and Comfort

Fit is what decides whether a rash guard actually stops chafe. A fitted cut sits flat against the skin so the board has nothing to rub against, which is the whole point when you're paddling. Our 100 has a loop at the hem that ties to your boardshort cord so it can't ride up mid-session. A looser cut is easier to pull on and cooler once you're dry, but it shifts around the moment you lie down on a board.

Material and UV Protection

Our UV tops are 82% polyester and 18% elastane, with the polyester 81% recycled. Polyester holds colour and shape through salt and sun, and the elastane supplies the stretch that keeps the fabric flat against you while you paddle. One caution worth knowing: elastane degrades in chlorinated water, so a top you also swim laps in won't last as long as one you only surf in.

Seam Quality

Look for flat seams on both sides. The seams need to be smooth to prevent chafing during extended wear. The construction needs to withstand repeated stretching and exposure to chlorine or saltwater. New rash guards should feel comfortable immediately without requiring a break-in period. Checking seams before purchase can help.

Drying Time

For casual use, drying time is not a significant factor. If you swim regularly or participate in water sports, a quick-drying rash guard makes a noticeable difference. Consider whether the material needs to dry within a few hours for your lifestyle.

Who is this for?

Parents and casual swimmers. A rash guard that offers straightforward UV protection without features you won't use. Easy to pull on, rinse off and dry for weekend swimming or water play.
Surfers and bodyboarders. Contact with the board is as much the problem as the sun is. A fitted top with flat seams under the arms takes the friction out of repeated paddling, and it doubles as a layer under a wetsuit to stop the neck and armpits rubbing.
People with sensitive or easily irritated skin. A rash guard designed specifically for sensitive skin. Soft hypoallergenic fabric and flat seams reduce chafing and irritation during swimming and extended water time.

How to care for your rash guard

Rinse the salt out as soon as you're off the water, then wash cool at 30 degrees with a mild detergent. No tumble dryer, no iron, no dry cleaning. Dry it inside out and away from direct sun. Check the underarm seams and the boardshort loop every so often, because those take the most load when you're paddling.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wear a rash guard if I already use sunscreen?

Yes. A rash guard provides a physical layer of protection against the sun while helping reduce chafing during swimming and other water activities. For the best protection, wear a rash guard with sunscreen on exposed skin, especially if you'll be outdoors for extended periods.

Should a rash guard fit tightly?

A rash guard should fit close to your body without restricting movement. A snug fit helps reduce drag in the water and keeps the fabric comfortable during swimming, surfing and other active water sports. It should feel secure while still allowing you to move freely.

Can I wear a rash guard under a wetsuit?

What's the difference between a rash guard and a UV shirt?

How should I care for a rash guard?

Yes. Many people wear a rash guard under a wetsuit to reduce chafing and make it easier to put the wetsuit on and take it off. It also adds an extra layer of comfort during longer sessions, whether you're surfing, diving or paddleboarding.
Both help protect covered skin from the sun, but rash guards are specifically designed for water sports. They typically offer a closer fit and stretch fabric that moves comfortably in the water, making them better suited to active swimming and surfing.
Rinse your rash guard with fresh water after every use to remove salt, chlorine and sand. Let it air dry away from direct sunlight and follow the care instructions to help maintain its shape and performance. Proper care can also help extend the life of the fabric for many seasons of water activities.

Skin Protection Across All Water Sports

A rash guard protects skin from sun and sand across every water activity, whether you're swimming laps, surfing, stand-up paddling, or snorkelling. The protection you get depends on the fit and fabric, so understanding what level of UV coverage makes sense for your water time helps you choose well. Because you'll wear it for hours, comfort matters as much as protection.
