How to choose a ping pong net

A good ping pong net goes up quickly, stays put and sits at the right height. We'll help you choose between retractable, clamp-on and screw-on sets, and check the fit on your table.

What to look for in a net

Table thickness

Clamps and clips only grip tables within a set thickness, so measure your table edge first. Our retractable Rollnet, for example, fits home tables between 0.5 and 6 cm thick.

Net tension

A sagging net changes how the ball plays over it. Look for a tension cord or adjuster, and tighten it until the net sits flat and level.

Portable or fixed

Retractable nets roll away after the game, which is handy on a dining table. Screw-on sets stay fitted and suit a table kept just for table tennis.

Height and length

A standard net sits 15.25 cm high. Many sets let you adjust the height, and retractable nets adjust in length, so check the maximum length against your table.

Who they're for

A retractable net turns the dining or outdoor table into a court in moments.

A clamp-on or screw-on set gives a firmer, more regular net for frequent games.

Keep your net in good shape

  • Ease off the tension when you pack the net away for a while.
  • Store the net out of direct sun when you're not playing.
  • Check clamps and screws before each game so the posts sit firm.
  • Bring the net inside after outdoor games, especially before rain.

Frequently asked questions

Will a ping pong net fit any table?

Not every net fits every table, so check the thickness range each set lists. Our retractable Rollnet is made for home tables between 0.5 and 6 cm thick, while clamp-on sets grip most table tennis tables. Some screw-on sets are designed for a particular brand of table, so read the product details first.

What height should a ping pong net be?

A standard net is 15.25 cm high along its whole length. Measure at both posts and in the middle, then adjust the posts or tension until the height is even. For casual games at home, close enough is fine, but a level net makes play fairer.

Is a clamp-on or screw-on net better?

Clamp-on and clip sets are quick to fit and remove, so they suit tables you also use for other things. Screw-on sets take a little longer to fit but stay firmly in place once set up. If you move the net often, go for a clamp or a retractable net.

How tight should a table tennis net be?

Tight enough that it sits flat with no sag in the middle and the top edge stays level. Use the tension cord or adjuster on your set and tighten it gradually. Ease the tension off when you store the net so the cord and mesh last longer.

Can I use a ping pong net outside?

Yes, most nets are fine for an outdoor game, and wind-resistant outdoor balls make play easier on breezy days. Sun and rain wear the net and clamps over time, so bring it inside after you play. A net that rolls away makes that easy.
