Toddlers and preschoolers
A low stand made for ages 3 to 7 means they score from the very first go.
The right kids basketball hoop starts low enough to score and rises as they do. Match it with a ball sized for their hands and the backyard becomes their first court. Here is how we would set them up.

Hand pumps to keep the ball properly inflated.
Little players need a rim they can actually reach. Up to age 10, club hoops sit at 2.60m, and from 10 everyone plays at the official 3.05m, so a hoop that adjusts covers years of growth.
If changing the height needs a toolbox, it rarely happens. Tool-free systems let you drop the rim for a younger sibling and raise it again in a minute.
Freestanding hoops rely on a weighted base. Sand is denser than water, so the same volume makes the hoop steadier, though harder to move.
A ball that is too big makes every shot a struggle. Sizes 3 and 4 suit ages 4 to 6, and size 5 suits ages 7 to 10.

A light, small ball and a lower rim mean more baskets and more reasons to keep playing.
One adjustable hoop can serve a younger child and a teenager by changing the height between games.
| Age | Ball size | Rim height |
|---|---|---|
| 2 and up | Size 1 | Whatever suits them |
| 4 to 6 | Size 3 or 4 | Whatever suits them |
| 7 to 10 | Size 5 | Club height 2.60m |
| Over 10 | Size 6 or 7 | Official 3.05m |
There is no official height for younger kids, so set it wherever they can score and enjoy it. Up to age 10, club hoops are set at 2.60m. From age 10, girls and boys play at the official 3.05m, which is why an adjustable hoop is the smart long-term choice.
Size 1 suits children from age 2, sizes 3 and 4 suit ages 4 to 6, and size 5 suits ages 7 to 10. A ball in the right size is lighter and easier to grip, so dribbling and shooting feel achievable. Size 6 and 7 come later as they move into junior and senior basketball.
Most hoop bases can take either, so check your product instructions first. Sand is denser, so the hoop is more stable but harder to move. Water is easier to handle, but it can leak through hidden cracks over time. We recommend sand for extra peace of mind.
Yes, if you want it to last. Our B100 Easy starts at 2.20m and rises to the official 3.05m in five tool-free steps, and the Costway hoop from our marketplace goes lower still, from 1.25m to 3.05m across 16 heights. A fixed hoop set too high is one of the quickest ways to lose a young player's interest.
Our freestanding hoops are made for outdoor play, but a little care keeps them in good shape. Cover the backboard against rain and frost, and lie the hoop down when it is not in use in strong winds. If the post has protective foam, store it inside during winter.
Pick a hoop that adjusts and a ball that fits their hands, and let the backyard do the rest.
