First-time carnival kids
A comfy pair of runners, a hat and a bottle cover the essentials.
Carnival day is a long one, with races, relays and plenty of time in the sun. Here is what we would pack so your child stays comfortable between events and ready when their name is called.
Our race day checklist, starting with the essentials.
Running shoes and everyday trainers for growing feet.
Caps, bucket hats and legionnaire styles for sunny days.
Water bottles and insulated flasks for long days outside.
Kids' T-shirts and tank tops for running and school sport.
Sports shorts for kids who need room to run.
Small backpacks and sports bags to carry the day's kit.
Kids grow fast, so check the fit before the big day and leave about a thumb's width at the toe. Wear new shoes a few times first so there are no surprises on race day.
Carnivals run for hours outdoors. Follow the SunSmart steps: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses.
Pack a full bottle and remind kids to sip regularly, before they feel thirsty. A bottle they can open easily is more likely to get used.
Light, breathable fabrics help kids stay comfortable in the heat. Check your school's uniform or house colour rules before you buy.

Light running shoes and breathable kit help them feel quick on the track.
A small backpack keeps everything together, from sunscreen to snacks.
| Item | Why it matters | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Running shoes | Grip and comfort for every race | Wear them in before the day |
| Cap or hat | Shade for the face, ears and neck | Wide brims and neck flaps cover more |
| Water bottle | Keeps kids sipping all day | Freeze it half full the night before |
| Sports T-shirt | Cool and easy to move in | Check house colour rules first |
| Sports shorts | Room to sprint and jump | An elastic waist is easiest to wear |
| Small backpack | Holds the whole day's kit | Label everything with their name |
| Sports socks | Help prevent rubbing and blisters | Pack a spare pair for after the races |
Most schools ask for house colours or sports uniform, so check the note from school first. Light, breathable clothes, comfortable running shoes and a hat are the essentials. Add sunscreen and a full water bottle, and your child is set for a long day outdoors.
Most primary school carnivals are run on grass, where running shoes or trainers with good grip work well. Spikes are usually only worth it for older kids who compete on a track, and some carnivals do not allow them. Check with the school before you buy anything specialised.
Follow the SunSmart steps: slip on sun-protective clothing, slop on broad-spectrum sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. Apply sunscreen before they leave home and reapply through the day as the label directs. A hat that shades the face, ears and neck gives the best cover.
Needs vary with age, weather and activity, so there is no single number to aim for. Encourage regular sips through the day rather than waiting for thirst, and send a full bottle that can be refilled. Water is the best choice for most children.
Aim to buy them a week or two ahead so your child can wear them in. That gives you time to spot any rubbing and swap sizes if needed. Check the fit with the socks they will wear on the day.
