Tips for Hunter Valley camping

Mostly about heat, water and dirt roads.

Plan for the heat

Summer in the Hunter can be hot, and big open campgrounds offer little natural cover. A shade shelter gives you somewhere cool to sit through the middle of the day.

Find Some Shade

Fill every container

Finchley, Blue Gums and Gap Creek have no water at all. Bring enough for drinking, cooking and washing up for every night you're staying.

Find a Water Bottle

Bring your own firewood

Firewood isn't supplied at the national park campgrounds, and at Blue Gums it can't be collected from the park. Pack it from home, and carry a stove for fire ban days.

Find a Camp Stove

Check the road first

The Yengo and Watagans roads are unsealed and turn boggy after rain, and Blue Gums is dry weather only. Check the forecast and park alerts before you commit.

Respect the engravings

The Aboriginal engraving site near Finchley is a short walk from camp. Look, but never walk on or mark the carvings.

Light up a dark camp

With no power and little light pollution, Yengo nights are properly dark, which is great for stars. A lantern for the table and a head torch for walking around keep things easy.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you go camping in the Hunter Valley?

Lake St Clair near Singleton is the easy, well-equipped choice with showers and a camp kitchen. Yengo National Park has Finchley, a small bush camp near Wollombi, and Blue Gums, a remote 4WD-only valley camp. In the Watagans, Gap Creek sits in a rainforest gully near Cooranbong.

Is there dog-friendly camping in the Hunter Valley?

Yes, at Lake St Clair. Singleton Council welcomes dogs there as long as they stay on a lead at all times. Pets aren't allowed in most NSW national parks, so Yengo and the Watagans campgrounds are off-limits for dogs.

Do the Hunter's national park campgrounds have water?

No. Finchley, Blue Gums and Gap Creek don't have drinking water, so you need to bring all of it with you. Allow for drinking, cooking and washing up, and a bit extra in hot weather.

Can I reach these campgrounds without a 4WD?

Mostly, in dry weather. Lake St Clair is an easy drive from Singleton, and Finchley and Gap Creek are on unsealed roads a 2WD can usually manage, though both need a 4WD when wet and Finchley's road isn't suited to low-clearance cars. Blue Gums is 4WD only, and only in dry weather.

Can you have campfires when camping in the Hunter?

At the national park campgrounds you can use the barbecues or fire rings, but you must bring your own firewood. Fire bans can apply during high fire danger, so pack a stove and check alerts before you go. Lake St Clair has electric barbecues and sells firewood on site.
