Grampians camping tips

Small things that make a dry, rocky park easier.

Carry your drinking water

None of these campgrounds has water we'd drink straight from the tank. Bring enough for drinking and cooking, and a way to treat water on the Peaks Trail.

Find a Water Bottle

Bring firewood or a stove

Firewood isn't supplied at Smiths Mill or Stapylton, and fires are never allowed on Total Fire Ban days. A gas stove means dinner happens either way.

Find a Camp Stove

Pack for cool nights

Clear nights on the ranges get cold, particularly outside summer. A warm sleeping bag and a decent mat do more than extra blankets ever will.

Find a Sleeping Bag

Pitch on a platform

Peaks Trail camps use timber tent platforms with steel chains, so ground pegs won't help much. A freestanding tent and some spare cord make setting up quick.

Find Your Tent

Expect no signal

The hike-in camps have no mobile reception. Leave your route with someone at home and download offline maps before you lose coverage.

Check alerts first

Campgrounds and tracks in the Grampians can close for works or after fire and flood damage. Look at Parks Victoria alerts and the fire danger rating before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Where's the best place to camp in the Grampians?

It depends on what you want close by. Borough Huts sits beside Fyans Creek south of Halls Gap, Smiths Mill is about 1km from Mackenzie Falls and Stapylton is the quieter pick in the north. For a night on foot, Gar is a hike-in camp on the Grampians Peaks Trail.

Is there drinking water at Grampians campgrounds?

No. Borough Huts, Smiths Mill and Stapylton have tank or tap water that isn't suitable for drinking, so bring your own. Peaks Trail tanks are untreated, so treat that water or carry enough for your walk.

Can you have a campfire in the Grampians?

At the drive-in campgrounds, yes, in the fireplaces or fire pits provided, and never on a Total Fire Ban day. Bring your own firewood. Fires aren't allowed at Peaks Trail camps like Gar, so pack a fuel stove for those.

What's camping on the Grampians Peaks Trail like?

It's proper hiking. The walk to Gar from the Gar Trailhead is about 7km and 4 hours over steep, uneven ground, and the trail is graded for fit, experienced walkers. Camps have timber tent platforms, toilets and untreated tank water, and you need to book before you start.

Can I take my dog camping in the Grampians?

Not in the national park. Dogs aren't allowed in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park or on the Peaks Trail, though assistance dogs are welcome. If your dog is coming, look at pet-friendly stays in the surrounding towns.
