Tips for camping around Coffs

Tides, water and sun matter more than the cold here.

Time the tide

Pebbly Beach is only reachable by vehicle at low tide, and the creek crossings change with rain. Check tide times and give yourself a buffer either side.

Carry every drop

Station Creek and Pebbly Beach have no drinking water. Bring enough for drinking, cooking and washing up, plus extra in case the tide keeps you in longer.

Find a Water Bottle

Peg for sand

Coastal ground is soft and the afternoon breeze picks up. Longer sand pegs keep the tent where you left it.

Get Pegs and a Mallet

Find some shade

North Coast sun is strong, even outside summer. A beach shelter or tarp keeps camp comfortable through the middle of the day.

Find Some Shade

Swim at patrolled beaches

Pebbly Beach is unpatrolled and has strong rip currents. Red Rock South and Minnie Water are the closest patrolled options.

Keep the catch cold

Fishing is a big part of camping on this coast. A good cooler and plenty of ice keep bait and dinner fresh between trips to town.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you camp near Coffs Harbour?

Woolgoolga Lakeside, about 25 minutes north of town, is the easy option with hot showers and lake and beach access. Further up the coast in Yuraygir National Park, Illaroo near Minnie Water is reachable in a 2WD. Station Creek and Pebbly Beach, also in Yuraygir, are 4WD-only beach camps for a wilder trip.

Is there drinking water at Yuraygir campgrounds?

Illaroo has drinking water, but Station Creek and Pebbly Beach don't. If you're heading to either of those, carry enough for drinking, cooking and washing up for the whole stay. Pebbly Beach depends on the tide, so pack a little extra in case you leave later than planned.

Can you have a campfire at Yuraygir?

Usually, yes, outside fire bans. Station Creek has wood barbecues and both it and Pebbly Beach sell firewood, while Illaroo has barbecues with firewood for sale on site or in Minnie Water. Total fire bans can apply in hot, windy weather, so check before you light up and pack a gas stove as backup.

How do you get to Pebbly Beach campground?

Only in a high-clearance 4WD, and only at low tide. The route in via Bacoongerie Road has water crossings that change with rainfall, so check tide times and conditions before you set off. Small caravans and trailers are fine if a high-clearance 4WD is towing them.

Can I bring my dog camping around Coffs Harbour?

Not in Yuraygir National Park, where pets aren't allowed. Woolgoolga Lakeside welcomes up to two dogs on a lead outside the Christmas and Easter peaks, and has a dog wash and a dog-friendly beach. Call ahead to confirm before you book.
