Starting simple prevents overwhelm and regrettable gear purchases. A starter bundle covers essentials without paralyzing choice, letting you focus on actual camping. An intermediate collection addresses problems you've actually encountered. Advanced setups let experienced campers specialise for their specific adventures ahead.
Build quality influences both how many seasons your equipment lasts and how dependable it stays. Weather-sealed construction protects your belongings from rain and elements, keeping comfort intact during unpredictable weather. Reinforced stitching and joints ensure gear survives constant packing, transport and use. For typical family camping, choosing solid mid-range quality delivers dependability whether you camp monthly or yearly. Think about your camping frequency and typical conditions to guide your choice.
Material Quality
Material quality shapes how your gear handles everyday use and environmental stress. Polyester remains the popular choice; tough, straightforward to clean and readily available. Canvas delivers upgraded strength and weather protection at the cost of extra weight and upkeep. If compact portability matters more than anything else, nylon excels, maintaining performance across multiple environments. At Decathlon AU, premium camping gear incorporates quality polyester blends, striking an ideal balance across all key performance factors.
Weather Resistance
Seek robust protective finishes across every component. The external surfaces should deflect water and prevent UV damage from direct sunlight. The underneath surfaces must remain protected when placed on wet grass or damp ground. Your new gear might require initial conditioning before the waterproof layer performs optimally. A quick pre-trip wipe-down activates protective coatings effectively.
Portability
Auto-based camping means equipment weight becomes less critical. Backpacking or foot-based travel absolutely demands lighter alternatives. Check whether your equipment fits into a rucksack or requires separate vehicle transport.
First-time campers. Planning your maiden camping trip, our essential gear bundle includes everything fundamental. Fuss-free equipment for establishing your campsite and enjoying outdoor time without unnecessary complexity.
Dedicated family camping enthusiasts. Our comprehensive camping collection suits families embarking on regular adventures. The reinforced construction preserves your investment through countless packing and transport cycles.
Adventure and outdoor enthusiasts. Our professional camping equipment range is engineered for severe conditions and prolonged expeditions. Premium materials deliver reliable functionality through intense weather where consumer alternatives often fail.
How to care for your camping gear
Clean all gear with warm soapy water and a soft cloth following each trip. Damp equipment traps moisture and causes mildew, so ensure complete drying before packing away. Direct sunlight gradually breaks down materials, requiring shaded storage locations. For a deeper clean, soak briefly in cool water with mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and air dry. Store in a cool, dry place rather than humid conditions. All camping products come with a 2-year warranty.
A basic starter collection is the right starting point for beginners. It includes essential items like a tent, sleeping bag, mat and basic cooking equipment without unnecessary extras. Focus on quality fundamentals over specialised gadgets, and gradually add items as you identify specific needs through actual camping experience.
