Moderate grip works a treat for most players whether you're mucking around with mates or playing seriously. If you know you're always playing in certain conditions, let that be your guide.

Look for material that works for your conditions. Synthetic leather is straightforward, stays in good nick and is what you'll find most places. Genuine leather grips brilliantly when it's hot or sweaty, though it's heavier and needs looking after. Rubber composites are worth a look if you play in all weather conditions because they actually toughen up with use. Think about where you play most and pick what suits your game.

Weight distribution matters more than you'd think. The ball needs to feel balanced in your hands during marking and kicking. Check that the seams are secure and well-stitched so the ball holds together through tough play. New balls take a few sessions to bed in properly.
